INDUSTRIAL
On the plant floor, many factors matter: cost, data rate, attenuation over distance, tensile strength, crush resistance, tolerance for repetitive stress and flexing, RFI/EMI and voltage fluctuation immunity. Versatility among the different communications protocols is also critical in creating seamless intra-factory communication. OFS fibers are specified by leading component manufacturers into their protocols
The following Industrial protocols support use of OFS Specialty Optical Fiber:
- ControlNet
- DeviceNet
- FieldBus
- Interbus-S
- ProfiBus
In harsh industrial environments, such as those found in smokestacks, chemical or food processing plants, or in outdoor installations, a different set of factors influences fiber or cable choice: water resistance, capacity to withstand pulling loads, hermeticity, extreme temperature functionality. Specialty fibers also meet threats of a different kind, providing tamper-proof communications for high security applications such as stock exchange floors and casino gaming installations.

What should I order?
All OFS fibers are immune to RFI/EMI,
so you can concentrate on controlling for other important factors, such as
rough handling, high stress, and repetitive flex. OFS' proprietary HCS fiber cladding is the standard—it provides high tensile strength, fatigue
and moisture resistance, is tolerant of wide fluctuations in temperature,
and can be easily terminated in the field using crimp and cleave
technology.
HCS optical fiber for industrial applications
The low OH content in our industrial HCS fiber is ideally suited for use with both 650 and 850 nm active devices. The cladding provides higher tensile strength and greater resistance to moisture than conventional claddings. In addition, it allows connectors to be directly crimped to the cladding for fast, efficient field terminations with OFS's Crimp & Cleave System. Together these features create a fiber well suited for a wide variety of industrial applications. For maximum protection in your environment, these fibers can all be cabled.

Most OFS Fibers are available cabled to make installation or deployment
easier and/or to protect the fibers for long-term use in harsh
environments. Simplex, zipcord, multiple fiber, armored, and other
constructions are available. We use various material combinations and
layers of ETFE, PVC, Polyurethane, and Polyethylene to create
cables to meet the demands of the desired application. OFS is compliant
with the European RoHS Directive for cable manufacturing. Additional cabling options are also available,
such as integrated strength members, breakout cords, color coding, and
custom jacket printing.

Avioptics Harsh Environment Cable |
Used for military and commercial aircraft communications,
particularly Rockwell Collins radio systems. Also used in harsh
industrial control environments. This cable design is built from the strength of 200 µm HCS fibers and incorporates various layers of ETFE and aramid braid for very high tensile strength and withstanding exposure to corrosive and other chemicals, including jet fuel, oil, solvents, and hydrolytic liquids. |
