Specialty Optical Fibers for Windpower
In the world’s quest for new alternative energy sources, windpower’s clean renewability has created a growth industry. Using fiber-optics in a windfarm system results in increased efficiency, energy capture, and even worker safety.
Windfarm conditions require some or all of the following fiber and cable features:
- Immunity to the electro-magnetic, radio-frequency (EMI/RFI), and noise levels created within the tower
when power is generated above and transmitted below.
- Ruggedness and durability
- Connectorization on site with non-consummable tools
- Resistance to humidity, high/low temperatures, or chemical exposure
- Low Smoke Zero Halogen regulatory requirements or flame resistance
- Reduction of wind and ice loading for aerial cables
- Compact sizing for tight conduit conditions
- Test information available by special arrangement.

OFS Crimp and Cleave termination kits make easy work of connectorizing
your specialty optical fibers right in the field without the use of
sensitive and messy epoxy polish routines. In most cases, it takes
less than two minutes per end with the portable tools contained in
these kits. Individual replacement parts are also available; these separate part
numbers are listed on the complete kit specification sheets.

Most OFS Fibers are available cabled to make installation or deployment
easier and/or to protect the fibers for long-term use in harsh
environments. Simplex, zipcord, multiple fiber, armored, and other
constructions are available. We use various material combinations and
layers of ETFE, PVC, Polyurethane, and Polyethylene to create
cables to meet the demands of the desired application. OFS is compliant
with the European RoHS Directive for cable manufacturing. Additional cabling options are also available,
such as integrated strength members, breakout cords, color coding, and
custom jacket printing.

Avioptics
Avioptics harsh environment cable optimizes high-performance aircraft and military vehicle applications. The cable design is based on 200 µm fibers and adds coating and strength members especially for the corrosive environments encountered on aircraft, including jet fuel, oil. Solvents, and hydrolytic liquids.
AquaLink
AquaLink coating is our newest defense against water in outdoor cabling applications.
FlightGuide
The FlightGuide family of aerospace fibers and cables offers high temperature and strength in graded-index fiber-based constructions. Multiple coating and cabling layers specialize the cables for military and aerospace use. Some FlightGuide fibers are available sold separately.
HCS
Hard Clad Silica (HCS) was invented by OFS scientists and now serves as the industry standard cladding material for optical glass fibers. HCS cladding imparts unusual strength to fiber and makes it easy to crimp and cleave connectors directly to the fiber using a hand tool in the field instead of more complex epoxy/polish methods.
OASiX
Optical Amplifier Simulation Software from OFS, OASiX is packaged with erbium-doped fibers sold for use in EDFAs. This software and graphical interface allows the designer to plug in modeling parameters shipped with the fiber and begin on-screen simulations. This reduces design time by predicting the performance of EDFA systems including optical components such as filters, isolators, and reflectors.
ST
This connector type features a bayonet-style nut and is commonly used in telecommunications applications.
TruePhase
TruePhase is the name to remember for all of OFS’s non-doped polarization maintaining fibers. These are single mode fibers optimized for different wavelengths and cladding size requirements.
V-System
This easy-to-use connectorization system simply plugs in with a reassuring click. It is available for simplex cables, or with a duplex latch housing for connectorizing zipcord. Connectorizing HCS coated fibers with V-System connectors takes less than 2 minutes per end when using the compatible OFS crimp and cleave kit.
ClearLite
One of the most complete, diverse lines of single-mode optical fiber you can find, ClearLite encompasses several families of photonic fibers, each optimized for different applications: 980, 1310 & 1550, Micro, Specialty Coated, Short Wavelength, and Polarization-Maintaining.
GyroSil
Designed specifically for gyroscopes and similar navigational instrumentation, GyroSil singlemode fiber has a small NA of 0.17 and reduced 80 µm cladding diameter to accommodate the tight bend radii and coiling designs inherent in gyroscopic and sensor applications.
PYROCOAT
PYROCOAT polyimide is our premier fiber coating for high-temperature applications. In recent years, we have further refined the polyimide properties to create new versions of PYROCOAT optimized for steam or chemical resistance. When applied over a hermetic carbon layer, it provides the best protection in the industry against the harshest environments.
UltraSil
Known in the medical industry for years for its ultra low water peak useful for high-power delivery, our UltraSil fibers are made from unique preforms that deliver both low OH and one of the highest NAs achievable with a silica cladding. These fibers are also finding new application in sensing when further coated with high-temperature polyimide.
