New Book Tells What's "Special"
About Specialty Optical Fibers

Specialty Optical Fibers HandbookWe may have become accustomed to thinking of optical fibers exclusively as a transmission medium in telecommunications.

But, although fiber optics have made their mark in all sorts of telecommunications components and devices—as a new book entitled, Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook, edited by Alexis Mendez, and T. Morse, makes very clear—there are now many other varieties of non-telecom optical fibers, and they are used in a myriad of applications.

The book, published by the Academic Press is available in stores now and offers a collection of 25 chapters of in-depth descriptions of different and unique types of optical fiber and their specific characteristics and intended uses. Topics range from standard telecommunication single-mode fibers to rare-earth doped fibers, to the newer and more esoteric photonic chrystal fibers. There are also a number of reference chapters on light-guiding properties, fabrication methods, coating materials, and mechanical strength and reliability.

Dr. Mendez’s goal in compiling the volume was to create a compendium of specialty optical fibers in a single source that would provide a technical reference for academics and researchers alike and to help promote their understanding and use in diverse applications.. “The field of optical fibers has become so diverse, and there is so much past work achieved and new inventions yet to discover; that my co-author and I thought opportune to put together a reference source for all the broad categories of optical fibers in common use today to help facilitate their study and review.”

OFS is particularly proud to have a number of its researchers and subject matter experts write several of the book's chapters and contribute to its technical breadth. Their specific contributions are the following:

Chapter 2: Light-Guiding Fundamentals and Fiber Design
Robert Lingle Jr., David W. Peckham, Alan McCurdy, and Jinkee Kim

Chapter 3: Overview of Materials and Fabrication Technologies
John B. MacChesney, Ryan Bise, and Alexis Mendez (MCH Engineering LLC)

Chapter 5: Single-Mode Fibers for Communications
Robert Lingle Jr., David W. Peckham, Karl H. Chang, and Alan McCurdy

Chapter 7: Rare Earth Doped Fibers
David J. DiGiovanni and Roman Shubochkin, T. F. Morse, Borut Lenardic (Boston University)

Chapter 14: Hermetic Optical Fibers- Carbon-Coated Fibers
Paul J. Lemaire (General Dynamics) and Eric Lindholm

Major Markets Get Their Own Brochures
OFS has supplied fibers, cables, and connectorized assemblies to the medical and industrial markets for over 20 years now. Our loyal customers knew what to order, and our knowledgeable Technical Sales Engineers walked newer customers through the various options, quizzing them until we knew exactly what they needed and made it for them.

Meet a Scientist

Dr. Lars Gruner-Nielsen

Dr. Lars Grüner-Nielsen
If you trace the development of a new specialty optical fiber, or fiber application, you will find it is touched by many people along its journey from research at OFS Laboratories to development and ultimately to a new commercial application. As a project manager in the Incubation Center at OFS Denmark, Lars Grüner-Nielsen plays a vital role in introducing new products to the market.

Specialty Optical Fibers Redefine the "X" in FTTX
The term FTTX, shorthand for fiber to a particular destination like to the desk or to the home, is taking on new meaning as optical fiber is found in many new and challenging places. In other words, the "X" in FTTX means even more.

Distributor Conference
The OFS Distributor conference was held March 3-4, locally at the Simsbury 1820 House for our representatives from China, Germany, France, Italy, Korea, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Timing was ideal because everyone was already away from their businesses and traveling for the OFC Conference in San Diego.

New Cleave Tool Service Center Opens in China
OFS’s joint venture in China, OFS Technology (Hangzhou) Ltd., is now prepared to accept Crimp & Cleave Tools for repair and calibration. This will make it faster and easier for our customers in China to keep their termination kits in top shape, saving the import/export step, and allowing them to deal with trained technicians in their own language.
