OFS 2008 Distributor Conference

The OFS Distributor conference was held March 3-4, locally at the Simsbury 1820 House here in Connecticut for our representatives from China, Germany, France, Italy, Korea, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Timing was ideal because everyone was already traveling for the OFC Conference in San Diego.

We took the opportunity to give our Distributors a personal introduction to new products they are now able to promote, to new markets they can target in their sales efforts, and to remind them about our existing products and their considerable advantages. We shared some new literature with them—the medical brochure, industrial brochure—and welcomed them to call on us for any additional collateral support they might need in their own sales and advertising efforts. Our Distributor in France, SEDI Fibre Optiques was the first to take us up on this offer. SEDI commented that “we have been impressed by the factory visit and the organizational effort, which we had already felt in term[s] of service and quality during the last months.” SEDI will be displaying newly minted posters of our HCXtreme ™ Optical Fibers and 62.5 µm products at Photonics Europe 2008, look for them in booth #313.

Robert Dauphinais, our International Sales Manager, emceed the event, ensuring that each Distribution representative had ample Robert Dauphinais, International Sales Manageropportunity to share their stories and express any challenges they were facing in the marketplace or with selling or servicing our products. Robert, being directly familiar with our distribution network, was able to draw connections between the many presentations by OFS Avon product managers and the issues they face in the field every day. He guided the discussions to help make sure all the information was as relevant to the attendees as possible.

Two representatives from our distributor, Seasun, stayed an extra day to attend a comprehensive training session for crimp tool servicing that allowed that facility to become an Authorized Repair Center (see related article), joining Sedi of France and Laser Components of Germany as certified to repair and calibrate these precision instruments for customers all over the world.

Bonnie Van Wie was in charge of making sure everyone was fed (well!) and entertained while here, and several of the attendees took advantage of the timing (and the favorable exchange rates) to head for some New York City shopping after the conference ended.

Major Markets Get Their Own Brochures
OFS has supplied fibers, cables, and connectorized assemblies to the medical and industrial markets for over 20 years now. Our loyal customers knew what to order, and our knowledgeable Technical Sales Engineers walked newer customers through the various options, quizzing them until we knew exactly what they needed and made it for them.

The term FTTX, shorthand for fiber to a particular destination like to the desk or to the home, is taking on new meaning as optical fiber is found in many new and challenging places. In other words, the "X" in FTTX means even more.

New Book Tells What's "Special" About Specialty Optical Fibers
We may have become accustomed to thinking of optical fibers exclusively as a transmission medium in telecommunications.

But, although fiber optics have made their mark in all sorts of telecommunications components and devices—as a new book entitled, Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook, edited by Alexis Mendez, and T. Morse, makes very clear—there are now many other varieties of non-telecom optical fibers, and they are used in a myriad of applications.
